Who is the White Death?

Simo Häyhä, also known as "The White Death," was a Finnish sniper who is credited with killing more than 500 enemy troops within 100 days during the Winter War against the Soviet Union from 1939 to 1940.

Related imageHäyhä accomplished this with a Russian-made Mosin-Nagant M91 rifle and iron sights. He preferred the iron sights to the scope because it allowed him to shoot from a lower, less visible position. The sights also didn't fog up in the cold or glare in the sun, which could give away his position, according to "Special Forces Sniper Skills," by Robert Stirling.

His career ended when he was shot in the face, blowing off part of his cheek and lower jaw. He survived the shot, becoming one of Finland's most legendary heroes. He died in 2002 of natural causes.

This six-minute video tells his incredible story.

The Real Pennywise

The Killer Clown John Wayne Gacy  (March 17, 1942 – May 10, 1994) was an American Serial Killer who raped, tortured and murdered at least 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978 in Cook County, Illinois. All of Gacy's known murders were committed inside his Norwood Park ranch house. His victims were typically induced to his address by force or deception, and all except one of his victims were murdered by strangulation with a makeshift garrote, as his first victim was stabbed to death. Gacy buried 26 of his victims in the crawl space of his home. Three other victims were buried elsewhere on his property, while the bodies of his last four known victims were discarded in the Des Plaines River. Convicted of 33 murders, Gacy was sentenced to death on March 13, 1980, for 12 of those murders. He spent 14 years on death row before he was executed by lethal injection at Stateville Correction Center on Ma...

The Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer He is our Jack the Ripper. Fifty years ago this week, a psychopath with a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol sneaked up on two high school students parked on a windswept lover’s lane in Benicia. Shot down as they scrambled in terror, the young couple died in a spray of gunfire. It was an unusually messy crime scene. The killing on Dec. 20, 1968, of David Faraday, 17, and his 16-year-old date, Betty Lou Jensen, marked the beginning of what became the twisted legend of the Zodiac Killer. By the time he was done, five more victims across the Bay Area would be shot or stabbed — three of them killed, two left barely alive but scarred for life. Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday, the Zodiac’s first victims.   | Chronicle File Photos Although the carnage spanned less than a year, the moniker Zodiac Killer was cemented into history. He would never be caught. Considering the homicidal tumult of the 1960s and ’70s, the number of his victims was actual...

The Siberian Ripper

The Siberian Ripper Who was the Siberian Ripper? Also known as Alexander Nikolayevich Spesivtsev was a Russian serial killer convicted for killing 4 people in Novokuznetsk in 1996. Spesivtsev, with the assistance of his mother Lyudmila, targeted street children  and young women across Novokuznetsk by luring them into their apartment, where they would be tortured and killed, and sometimes cannibalized . Despite only being convicted for 4 murders, Spesivtsev confessed to 19 murders that he was accused of by police, and based on evidence is believed to have committed over 80 killings as early as 1991. During Childhood, Spesivtsev was considered unsocial, did not have any friends and was bullied while school.  Spesivtsev and his mother held a strong but unusual relationship, as Lyudmila would regularly show her son photographs of corpses from books about criminal cases at a very young age, and the two shared a bed until Spesivtsev was 12. Growing up Spesivtsev...
